BAI Requirements & Travel Guidelines
-
Health Certificate:
A valid Veterinary Health Certificate must be issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian within 7 days of travel and endorsed by the USDA. -
Rabies Vaccination:
Pets must be vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days before departure. The certificate must include vaccine manufacturer, batch number, and date of expiration. -
Microchip Identification:
A 15-digit ISO 11784/11785 compliant microchip is strongly recommended and may be requested for identification upon arrival. -
Import Permit:
Secure an import permit from the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) before travel. Submit application online or via email with vaccination records and health documents. -
Customs Declaration:
Travelers must declare pets to Philippine customs upon arrival. Be prepared with all documents and copies for inspection. -
Quarantine Inspection:
Upon arrival, pets will undergo veterinary inspection. In most cases, home quarantine of up to 30 days is recommended rather than facility quarantine, unless health concerns arise. -
Approved Entry Airports:
Pets should enter the Philippines via NAIA (Manila), Mactan-Cebu (CEB), or Clark (CRK) International Airports where BAI quarantine stations are available.
Travel Crate Guidelines
Your pet must travel in an airline-approved IATA crate. The crate should be safe, secure, and well-ventilated. Learn more about crate guidelines for a stress-free journey.
- Crate Size: Your pet should be able to stand, turn, and lie down comfortably.
- Ventilation: Ensure airflow on at least three sides.
- Durability: A sturdy door and secure locks are essential for air transport.
Before travel, consult our departure checklist to make sure you have everything ready.
Retiring to the Philippines with Pets
Many Americans are choosing to retire in the Philippines—and bringing their pets along for the adventure. With a warm climate, low cost of living, and increasing access to pet-friendly housing, the Philippines offers a welcoming environment for pets and their owners.
When retiring abroad, consider these key tips:
- Pet-Friendly Accommodations: Confirm housing allows pets and offers outdoor space or proximity to parks.
- Veterinary Services: Research clinics in your area to ensure post-arrival checkups and care are accessible.
- Climate Adjustment: Pets may need time to adjust to the tropical heat. Provide cooling mats and limit midday activity.
Relocating for retirement with your pets can be a rewarding and life-enhancing journey when properly planned.
