Pet Shipping to Australia from the USA — 2025/2026 Requirements

Australia has the world’s strictest pet import rules. The process takes a minimum of 6–8 months and requires precise timing — one missed step resets the 180-day countdown.

Our IPATA-certified team coordinates every step: titer test timing, DAFF import permits, Mickleham quarantine booking, USDA documentation, and airline cargo. We’ve done this route many times.

2026 Update — Bengal Cats Now Banned. As of March 1, 2026, Bengal cats are no longer permitted to enter Australia. Savannah cats, Chausie cats, and all domestic/non-domestic feline hybrids remain banned. If your cat was granted an exemption before February 28, 2025, contact DAFF directly to confirm your case status. Verify directly with DAFF for any current Bengal situations.

Shipping a pet from the United States to Australia is one of the most complex international pet relocations in the world. Australia’s biosecurity laws protect the country from rabies and other diseases not present on the continent — and those protections require months of careful preparation, precise veterinary timing, a mandatory titer test, and post-arrival quarantine for every pet, no exceptions.

The USA is classified as a Group 3 approved country by Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), which means direct import is permitted — but every step must be completed in the correct sequence and timing. Our team at Across The Pond Pets specializes in this route and has coordinated numerous successful relocations to Australia. Step-by-Step Process & Timeline

Every step must be completed in this exact sequence. The 180-day mandatory wait is the single largest constraint — it cannot be shortened and begins only when the blood sample physically arrives at the DAFF-approved laboratory.

  1. Start Here — 6–8 Months Before Travel

    Microchip Implantation

Your pet must have an ISO 11784/11785 compliant 15-digit microchip implanted before any rabies vaccination. Microchips starting with 999 and 9-digit AVID chips are not accepted by DAFF. The microchip must be implanted and verified by a USDA-accredited vet. Consider sending a compatible scanner with your pet to facilitate verification on arrival.

  2. Immediately After Microchip

    Rabies Vaccination

After microchip confirmation, administer a rabies vaccination. This vaccination must remain current through the entire process and through the quarantine period. If it lapses at any point before arrival, the case may reset entirely — requiring re-vaccination, a new titer test, and a new 180-day wait.

  3. Critical Step — 180-Day Clock Starts Here

Rabies Neutralizing Antibody Titer Test (RNATT)

At least 21 days after the rabies vaccination, a USDA-accredited vet draws blood for the RNATT. The sample must be sent to a DAFF-approved laboratory. The test must use the FAVN or RFFIT method. The minimum passing result is 0.5 IU/ml. The 180-day mandatory wait starts from the date the sample arrives at the laboratory, not the date blood was drawn. The result is valid for 12 months from the blood draw date — your pet must travel and arrive in Australia within that 12-month window.

  4. While Waiting for 180-Day Period

Identity Verification (Reduces Quarantine to 10 Days)

Two USDA-accredited veterinarians must complete the identity verification process — microchip scanning and photographic documentation. Completing this process reduces the mandatory quarantine from 30 days to 10 days. Start this as early as possible while the 180-day wait runs.

  5. Dogs Only — Additional Testing

    Brucella canis Test (Dogs Only)

Dogs must be tested for Brucella canis using an approved method: RSAT, TAT, or IFAT (standard versions only). This test must be conducted by a USDA-accredited veterinarian. Results must be negative. Our documentation team coordinates vet appointments and ensures correct test methods are used.

  6. After 180-Day Wait Confirmed

Apply for DAFF Import Permit via BICON

Once the RNATT result is endorsed and identity verification is complete, apply for the import permit through Australia’s BICON system. The permit must be issued before quarantine space at Mickleham can be booked. This is not a formality — allow several weeks for processing.

  7. 4–6 Weeks Before Departure

    Book Mickleham Quarantine Space

After the import permit is issued, book quarantine space at the Mickleham Post Entry Quarantine Facility near Melbourne. This is Australia’s only approved post-entry quarantine facility for pets. Space books up quickly — do not delay this booking. The minimum stay is 10 days (if identity verification was completed).

  8. 10 Days Before Departure

USDA Health Certificate & Government Endorsement

A USDA-accredited vet issues the health certificate within 10 days of departure. This must then be endorsed by USDA APHIS. An official government veterinarian must also check and sign the RNATT test declaration. Our team coordinates all of this with your vet and manages the USDA endorsement process. The crate must be sealed with an official USDA seal on the day of departure, and the seal number recorded on the health certificate.

  9. Arrival in Australia

    10-Day Quarantine at Mickleham, Melbourne

All pets enter a minimum 10-day quarantine at the Mickleham facility in Victoria. Quarantine costs approximately AUD $2,000+ for the 10-day minimum as of 2025. Failure to meet any import condition may result in a 30-day quarantine or return of the pet. After passing all final health checks and receiving the official DAFF release, you may collect your pet.

Australia requires all pets to travel in IATA-compliant crates. The crate must be sealed with an official USDA seal on departure day, with the seal number recorded on the health certificate.

  • Ventilation: Adequate airflow on at least three sides
  • Door: Metal door with secure locking mechanism
  • Bedding: Absorbent lining required
